The Laundry Room Lowdown

One of the most easily overlooked rooms in the home, that is one of the most often used - The Laundry Room. We spend a considerable amount of time using this space, but have you ever really put much consideration into the functioning of it? For most of us, the answer is no, and as a result, we’re not getting the best use of the space. But if we were getting the maximum usefulness of the room, our day to day chores would be made much lighter. The Laundry Room Lowdown will help you to maximize, organize and improve your time spent in this space.

To begin, we want to start fresh with the room. Start by emptying out the entire room if possible, leave only the washer and dryer. Sort through everything. It's pretty common for the laundry room to become a dumping grounds or graveyard for unused or unwanted items in the household. Determine if what is in there is needed, can be donated, trashed or can find another place to live within the home.

There’s a number of key points to enhance the laundry room and its functionality, as well as specific finishes and fixtures that are best suited for them. First and foremost, you want to establish “zones”. Here’s a list of some examples:

  • Dirty Clothes Zone - try to locate this area next to the sink / utility sink for ease of spot cleaning stained items. Have multiple stationary baskets for sorting and a stain kit stocked.

  • Clean Clothes Zone - this should be alongside the dryer, typically a table or mounted surface for folding. Under the table, keep empty baskets for folded clothing and if possible, add a clothes rod stocked with hangers for items that need to be hung. This is also the ideal area to keep the ironing board.

  • Storage Zone - the laundry room doesn’t only have to be for laundry, utilize this zone to store your detergent, household cleaning items, decorations, extra toiletry and excess pantry items. This area should maximize the space for the most available storage, especially since this room is typically a small area. Check out this article from The Spruce for a great list of ideas.

We have our zones, let’s address some safety tips. Be sure that your detergent is stored safely by keeping it out of reach of small children and animals. Keep it stored in a cool, dry place that is secure to avoid spills or leaking. Be sure that there is room left on all sides of your washer and dryer. It's important to leave space around a washer and dryer on all sides to ensure proper ventilation, easy access for loading and unloading clothes, minimize noise from vibrations, and allow for maintenance like cleaning behind the appliances, especially if they are stacked; generally, you should leave about an inch of space on each side and behind the machines. And take care that any and all drying racks, clothing rods and shelving or cabinets are installed securely. Being in a small space, you don’t want to risk things coming loose and falling, there’s much less room to avoid having it fall on you or other things that could cause damage.

The proper selection of finishes and fixtures play such an important role in the laundry room.

And to REALLY make the laundry room into its most functional form, style it. Breathe life into this room! Too often, the laundry room is left drab and uninviting, making it all the more boring to complete an essential daily chore.
