The "White Sales" Time of the Year!

Phew! We made it through the holidays and are getting back into our grooves in the New Year. It’s the time of year when it’s cold, it’s gray, it’s snowy. We want to stay indoors, rest and be cozy. This makes for perfect timing for January’s White Sales! 

What’s a White Sale you say? A "White Sale" is a retail tradition, historically held in January, featuring deep discounts on bedding, towels, and other linens, named because items were originally sold in white due to limited dye options. Today, these sales cover all colors and extend to other home textiles and sometimes furniture, serving as a post-holiday inventory clear-out and a chance to refresh homes. Deals often peak around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. 

This tradition even has some fun local history to it, right in Philadelphia! In 1878, John Wanamaker of Philadelphia department store fame decreed January to be the time for a "White sale". Bed linens, which were available in white only, were sold at a discount. This was done to increase sales for these items at a time of the year when sales were normally slow. Over time, sales expanded to include colored linens, towels, comforters, and other home goods as retailers cleared post-holiday stock.
